Words & Music: NewK (aka John Newcott) Music: October 24th – November 8th, 2009 Lyrics: December 9, 2009 – March 27, 2010 Adrift at sea – with tattered sails / One arm rows – the other bails Decisions made – when all else fails / what’s swept aside – and what prevails Blindly sailing – out into, a raging sea Tossed adrift – storm clouds approach and, though all seems lost Chart a course – heading towards home, no matter the cost A voyage launched – with good intent Who gets to choose – what to forget The weight of loss – is all that’s left Condemned to random – ports of call Where sinners thrive – and angels fall Confronted by – the highs and lows Embrace the dark – and undertow Back out at sea – with full blown sails / removed from all – those squalid tales Of indiscretions – thinly veiled / what’s kept inside – and what’s detailed Calmly sailing – into a still and quiet sea © 2023 Sean Francis

Creases 02:06
“Creases” (for Becca Stevens) Music & Lyrics: January to April, 2017 by NewK (aka John Newcott) Touch these outstretched hands – so empty Smell the ones so polished and clean Where did they come from? – What do they mean? No one came – or failed to notice None to blame – for carelessness Like a shield – that can’t protect Hiding nothing – but lost respect Take another look – who noticed? That silence – wedged in between Some secret longing – a restless dream No one came – or failed to notice None to blame – for carelessness Like a shield – that can’t protect Hiding nothing – but lost respect Behold those eyes – so certain Looking back towards – places they’ve been While the stranded – yearn to be seen Copyright 2023 Sean Francis

Clown Car 03:20
"Clown Car" (for Walter Becker) Words: November 2018 through April 2019 Music: April 2019 by NewK (aka John Newcott) Specters dance wildly on mobile screens Howling and wailing – what the hell does it mean? Spastic gyrations – down the halls of ill will Planning and plotting – heading in for the kill What kind of difference – could this madness all make Pats on the back – singed at the stake Approaching the altar – of self-loathing and shame Questioning why – there’s so much skin in the game Parlaying worry – to a serious art Take out the horse – before it gets to the cart Wondering aloud – if these lies might be real Checking your pulse – to interpret this deal Masking all fear – in a cloak of desire Righting the wrongs – while starting the fire Praising the big top – raising the roof Crawl through the ashes – for an ember of truth Copyright 2023 Sean Francis

For Hannah Ruby & Hannah A Words – October/November 2017 Music – Nov. 22 to Nov. 25, 2017 (NewK – aka John Newcott) Heart, heavy as an asteroid Tumbling in free flight – lost in the void Makeshift pronouncements – blind in one eye Wary of insights – last chances float by A transparent wall – painted over the moon Informed by the notion – of letting go too soon Pay attention – lest you fade away Before bluer skies – turn to deep shades of grey All that dark matter – burning deep within Lines no one’s crossed yet – surprisingly thin The only thing moving – in a vaster terrain A fragment of heartache – a costly refrain Watching the night world – disappear in a cloud Gently, hypnotic – dissolving the shroud Wading through the river The currents much too strong How long have you been trying? Perhaps, too long All that dark matter – burning deep within Lines no one’s crossed yet – surprisingly thin Ever so thin Watching the night world – disappear in a cloud Gently, hypnotic – dissolving the shroud Pay attention – lest you fade away Copyright 2023 Sean Francis

“THE GREAT UNWATCHED” (for Christopher Walsh & Allan Holdsworth) Music & Lyrics – 12/31/11 to 1/2/12 NewK (aka John Newcott) WHO HEARS THE LONESOME? WHO EVEN TRIES? WHO’s THERE TO CATCH THEM? WHO FEIGNS SURPRISE? WHAT SCRATCHED THE SURFACE? WHAT MADE A MARK? WHAT IS THIS TREASON? WHAT DOWSED THE SPARK? WHERE ARE THE SIGNPOSTS? WHERE WILL THIS END? WHERE IS THE EXIT? WHERE LIES THE TREND? WHY RECONSIDER? WHY RAISE THESE DOUBTS? WHY SUFFER ALL THESE QUESTIONS? WHY NOT JUST SHUT THEM OUT? HOPE, CHANCE AND BALANCE RESOLVE, INTUITION AND FAITH Copyright 2023 Sean Francis

"Challenge or Dare, Part1" (for Bear) Words and music by NewK October 6-8, 2017 Nobody hinted – how this tale might end Or said what was coming – or tried to pretend All understanding – of what went down The saddest of jesters – the fiercest of clowns Gripping the center – the fringes shake There’s no mistaking – what a mess we make Cue the applause now – that this farce might end An insurrection – of grace my friend In the next sentence – the truth is laid bare What does it matter? – Why should you care? Till something better – might come along Patient and vigilant – caring and strong

about

This recording was begun sometime in 2018 (it’s all a blur now) and scheduled for a Fall 2020 release, before we found ourselves navigating life in the “upside-down”. Work resumed in earnest, sometime in 2021.

Sincerest and heartfelt thanks to my Producer and beloved nephew, Blake Reynolds, for his herculean efforts in all aspects of bringing this project to fruition. There are no words to fully express my gratitude.

Extra special thanks to my dear friend of many decades Christopher Walsh, for his impeccable musicianship and supportive spirit. Blake & Chris have been my two greatest champions. Collaborating with fellow artists who “get it” about what you’re attempting creatively is the most rewarding and inspiring experience.

Thus, Gatefold was born. This recording is the first of many projects to come.

The dedications attached to these songs come from a place of purity. I can’t possibly repay these amazing artists, creative souls, and in some cases dear friends, for their inspiration and influence.

There is simply not enough room to thank all the family, friends, musicians, and professional colleagues who have contributed to my growth as a person and an artist. The indelible marks you have left on my work and life are truly immeasurable.

We all screw up, but occasionally we get it right, despite ourselves. The priceless moments captured in these photos are irrefutable evidence of that. The life-changing presence of this profound love is never taken for granted.

I sincerely hope you like what you hear and thanks ever so much for listening.
